Arkayev Interview (only relevant parts included)
Asked about Khorkina posing for PLayboy -
"I treat this properly. Sveta is an adult and she has the right to answer questions (that is, being asked to pose) herself. And besides, I do not see anything strange in it. It has only added to her popularity and to gymnastics as a whole. Now everyone has the possibility to see that we have beautiful girls.

Asked about the future stars and leaders of Russian gym (note: he doesn't say Chepeleva )
"If you will come to the palace of sports from July 16 until July 23 at the championships of Russia you will see such talented and promising gymnasts as Dmitri Drevin. At the European championships among juniors one month ago he acted perfectly and deserved the recognition of the public and the experts. He is only 18 years, old, but I do not exclude the possibility that with a good result in the national championships he can win a ticket to Sydney. The girls to make their way in elite of world gymnastics are the forces of Anna Pavlova and Maria Zasipkina. they simply create miracles. Spectators are simply delighted after their job on the podium. In a word, with some reserve, there are a lot of athletes which prop up Khorkina and Nemov."

"Rumour"
Someone recently saw Charlie's Angels and told me that it was Khorkina herself doing back handsprings in the white body suit (in the scene where Cameron Diaz broke into the .... don't want to give anything away). She told me, "Who else would be thin enough to stand in for Cameron Diaz - wearing all white, no less?"

I've not seen the movie yet but I will see it soon. Anyway there must be thousands of tall, blonde dancers that can do a back handspring, so I doubt that because the person in the movie is tall and blond it means that it's
Khorkina. Someone else went to see the movie and told me that the person does bear a resemblance to Khorkina.

Resse Gossip
Svetlana Khorkina, Elena Prodonova and Vanessa Atler all wore belly
rings! Guess that they all stopped at a piercing parlor during the tour!
All of the girls wearing tiny tops - Atler, Moceanu, Dantzcher - had to
adjust their tops in the middle, or end of their routines.

RUSSIA CELEBRATES NATIONAL GYMNASTICS DAY
Under the motto "Gymnastics is Movement and Movement is Life," Russia held its second annual "All-Russian Day of Gymnastics" on November 4th. Over 100,000 participants took part in mass competitions and displays of gymnastics in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Chelyabinsk, Krasnoyarsk, and other cities across Russia. In Moscow, competitors at a competition at the Olimpiskii Arena received their awards from Olympic gold medalist and hometown hero Yelena Zamoldochikova. On hand were gymnastics coaches and officials ready to give information to anyone expressing an interest in the sport. Other Russian Olympic champions in attendance at Olimpiskii included Larisa Latynina, Mikhail Voronin, and Olga Karasyova.

Russian gymnastics czar Leonid Arkayev told news agency ITAR-TASS that the idea of a national holiday just for gymnastics took awhile to come to fruition. With pride he noted the status of his gymnasts as worldwide leaders in the sport, but expressed disappointment that its popularity in Russia was not proportionate with its success. He hoped the celebration would encourage more Russians, specifically children and teenagers, to take up an interest in gymnastics and all exercise for the sake of their health.

Arkayev once again denied persistant rumors that he was headed abroad to coach in Greece. "It's absolute hogwash," he said. "I did not receive any invitation and I am not preparing to go anywhere."

WORLD CUP COMPETITORS ANNOUNCED
Expected competitors for the 2000 World Cup, to be held next month in Glasgow, Great Britain, have been announced by the organizing committee (see roster below for names). Qualified Russian stars Alexei Nemov, Svetlana Khorkina and Yelena Produnova, currently touring in the US, are not expected to attend. (Nemov's name has already been officially withdrawn, the others are still listed.)

Also questionable is Olympic champ Simona Amanar (Romania), who plans to retire, but hasn't yet decided when she'll call it quits. (She has gone back
and forth on the subject, originally saying she'd compete in the Cup, then saying she wanted to stop immediately.

Qualification for the Cup finals, which will feature artistic and rhythmic gymnasts, is based on a series of international events, including the '99 worlds and 2000 Olympic Games. A maximum of two gymnasts per country can qualify on each event.

RADUCAN SUES IOC
Dethroned Olympic gold medalist Andreea Raducan announced yesterday that she would sue the International Olympic Committee in an effort to clear her name. "I have decided to start legal proceedings because I am innocent,"
Raducan said in an official statement, released Tuesday.
"I need an official decision that recognizes that. I don't want [the title reinstated]. The only thing I want is for my name to be dropped from the black list of doping."
Raducan lost the all-around gold, but retained team and vault medals, after testing positive for pseudoephidrene, an IOC banned substance found in many over-the-counter cold pills. While still in Sydney, Raducan appealed to the Court of Arbitration of Sport, which upheld the IOC penalty even though IOC officials admitted that Raducan received "no competitive benefit" from the pseudoephidrene in her system.
Teammate Simona Amanar, who was crowned Olympic champ after Raducan's title was rescinded, physically returned the medal to Raducan last month. Amanar said that the gold meant "nothing to her" and argued that it rightfully belonged to Raducan, who also received a specially-made "replacement gold" from a jeweler which was inscribed with the sentiment, "Andreea is the everlasting Olympic champion in our hearts."
The Romanian Olympic Committee (COR) has also remained steadfast in their support of Raducan, making sure she received all the prize money she would have been eligable for as the all-around champ, as well as refusing to
apply a COR rule that says all athletes found doping must be "banned for life" from future competitions.
